Tuatara / ムカシトカゲ

• ニュージーランド動物シリーズ（第一回）

ムカシトカゲという爬虫類です。
ムカシトカゲはトカゲの一種ではなくて、「ムカシトカゲ目」という独立した種を形成しています。

ムカシトカゲだなんて変な名前ですが、2億年前から姿を変えていない「生きた化石」なので、ムカシトカゲなのだそうです。
安易なネーミングですな。
ムカシトカゲは、ニュージーランドにしか生息していないんですよ！
日本の動物園水族館では見れないので、今思えば貴重な生き物を激写しました。

マオリの言葉ではトゥアタラ(tuatara)と言います。意味は「背中のトゲ」だそうです。

This is the reptile called Tuatara.
The Tuatara looks like a lizard but it belongs to the order Sphenodontia, which is called living fossils because its shapes has not changed for about 200 million years.
Tuatara inhabit only New Zealand.
Thinking back now, I think I took a precious photograph because Tutara cannot be seen in zoos and aquariums in Japan.
